Fala-se tanto em Avatar como se o conceito fosse novo. Acontece que não é. Em 1998, o então líder do Blur, Damon Albarn, se juntou com Jamie Hewlett, o co-criador da história em quadrinhos Tank Girl, e criaram a banda virtual de trip-rock Gorillaz. Os dois apostaram na animação e o marketing da banda é centrado nos videoclipes.
Damon Albarn, o alter ego do Gorillaz
A banda é composta por quatro garotos animados: 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle e Russel. A música é resultado da colaboração entre vários músicos convidados e/ou contratados. O único permanente é o pai da ideia, Damon Albarn. Embora seu estilo musical seja classificado genericamente como "rock alternativo", a banda recebe muita influência do britpop, dub e de música eletrônica.
Os quatro garotos/avatares do Gorillaz
O primeiro CD da banda (Gorillaz), lançado em 2001, vendeu sete milhões de cópias e mereceu um lugar no Guinness World Records como a banda virtual de mais sucesso. O segundo CD (Demon Days), em 2005, foi melhor ainda. Ganhou cinco Discos de Platina na Inglaterra e dois nos Estados Unidos. Além disso, em 2006, recebeu cinco indicações para o Grammy Awards e ganhou um na categoria Melhor Colaboração Pop.
Após um período de sumiço, quando se especulou até o fim da banda, Gorillaz lançará no próximo dia 8 de março na Europa e no dia seguinte nos EUA, o seu terceiro CD, Plastic Beach, que certamente é tão bom quanto os anteriores.

Esse CD conta com colaborações de diversos artistas, como Snoop Dog, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kano, Bashy, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Mick Jones, Paul Simon, Sinfonia ViVa e a Orquestra Nacional Libanesa para Música Árabe Oriental.
Mais uma vez, a banda vem forte nos videoclipes. Aqui, o Café & Conversa apresenta o recém-lançado videoclipe da música Stylo. O single tem a participação especial do ator Bruce Willis numa engraçada perseguição de carros nas estradas do Meio Oeste americano. Essa música foi lançada em 26 de janeiro para download na loja virtual da Apple, a iTunes Store.
